Glasgow Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has said that Joe Aribo and Kemar Roofe will not be available for the Old Firm derby on Saturday.
Steven Gerrard confirms double injury blow
The importance of the match against Celtic this weekend cannot be underestimated, but the build-up has not been the best for Gerrard. There have been injury question marks over a number of players, including Borna Barisic and Filip Helander, whilst Alfredo Morelos’ long trip back from South America put his participation in doubt.
However, there had been no confirmation of absences until now. Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Gerrard said:
“We are still assessing the International players who have arrived. We won’t have a full update on the International boys until later today. Joe Aribo and Roofe are really close but this game may be a little bit too soon for them to return.”
Gerrard’s squad must step up
This is far from ideal for the Ibrox outfit. While Gerrard has been without both Roofe and Aribo for the last few matches, they are both classy players who have plenty of ability. In an ideal world, the pair would be available to face Rangers’ fierce rivals.
Will Rangers beat Celtic this weekend?
Having said that, Gerrard has plenty of options to cover those absences. Cedric Itten and Alfredo Morelos, who is already back in Glasgow, are both more than capable of causing Celtic problems, whilst Scott Arfield’s three goals and three assists in 13 matches show he can cushion the blow of the loss of Aribo’s creativity, which has been lauded by Rangers legend Brian Laudrup.
As such, Gerrard has plenty to work with on Saturday despite Aribo and Roofe missing out.
