After a combustible few months during which they unsuccessfully called for an independent investigation into the SPFL after accusing the organisation of corruption over its handling of the 2019/20 league resolution proposal, Glasgow Rangers’ pre-season preparations have got off to an ideal start.
Steven Gerrard’s side claimed the Veolia Trophy at the weekend after a 2-0 win over Nice in the mini-tournament in Lyon as they gear up to try and prevent Celtic from winning a 10th successive Premiership title in the coming months.
The Ibrox club shared a photo of teenage defender Nathan Patterson on Instagram (via @rangersfc) during the trip to France, with the caption displaying a recent comment from the 18-year-old, who said (as per Daily Record): “I am delighted to be a part of the squad and to train with top, experienced players.”

Numerous ‘Gers fans flooded to the replies to the post to praise the teenager for his willingness to learn from seasoned professionals at Ibrox. With a large number of comments focusing on Patterson’s attitude, some supporters were perhaps making a veiled point towards another ‘Gers youngster in Kai Kennedy – indeed, some fans directly called out the latter in the comments section.
The teenage winger has been told to find a new club after rejecting an offer to extend his current deal at Ibrox, having made lofty demands to the Light Blues’ hierarchy, and Gerrard appeared to take aim at him over that stance when he told Rangers TV: “I have been hearing a few things down at the academy that there’s been a bit of ego about. So they won’t be around me.”
Can Nathan Patterson become a first team regular at Ibrox this season?
Kennedy’s only first team action for the club so far came in a nine-minute substitute appearance against Stranraer in the Scottish Cup six months ago, the same match in which Patterson made his senior debut as part of the starting line-up. Gerrard has praised the defender’s attitude during his time in the first team squad, and his involvement in the team’s Veolia Trophy triumph could pave the way for further inclusion throughout the 2020/21 season.
‘Gers fans, can you see Patterson having a part to play for Gerrard’s team during the upcoming season? Comment below with your views!
