While some Glasgow Rangers fans may not have dared to dream of winning 4-0 away to Willem II in last night’s Europa League qualifier, there was another element of surprise for many of the Ibrox faithful arising from the match.
With just under 20 minutes to go, Steven Gerrard made his first substitution of the night, withdrawing Ryan Kent and putting on Jordan Jones in his place for his first appearance of the season. Indeed, the Northern Ireland international had become such a peripheral figure at Ibrox that, two months ago, he was told by Gerrard that he could leave the club, although no such move materialised.
Does Jordan Jones deserve more regular game-time at Ibrox?
As it happened, the 25-year-old ought to have had a late assist as, in the closing minutes in Tilburg, he set up Ianis Hagi for what ought to have been a simple finish, only for the Romanian to fire over the crossbar (as per Glasgow Live).
Jones made only 15 appearances last season, the vast majority as a substitute, and these ‘Gers fans on Twitter were surprised to say the least when Gerrard decided to spring him from the bench:
