Glasgow Rangers legend Brian Laudrup has compared James Tavernier to former Liverpool star and current Ibrox boss, Steven Gerrard.
Tavernier like Gerrard
Tavernier is the club captain at Rangers and has been an incredibly important player for the 54-time Scottish champions down the years. Despite being a right-back, he is already the Premiership’s top scorer this term.
“How would you sum up Steven Gerrard’s mentality as a player? Relentless seems like a good word.
“You want to see relentless? Look at James Tavernier in action this season. He is perpetual motion in games always running, always closing down space, always trying to ask questions of the opposition.
“When the camera pans to him in matches, you can also see Tavernier making demands of his teammates. Keep going. We need more. The same was coming from Gerrard, who didn’t even look happy when Rangers went 3-0 up after 19 minutes.”
In terms of a global scale, Tavernier will struggle to ever compare to Gerrard, but in terms of their importance to their respective clubs, this is a worthy comparison. He has been with the club since 2015, helping them back to the top tier of Scottish football, and his attacking contributions have been stunning.
Is James Tavernier a Rangers legend?
In 263 games in all competitions, he has 58 goals and 83 assists. Already this term, he has netted 12 times and created nine others – he is in the form of his life. If he can go on to lift the Premiership title this season with Rangers, he will be an indisputable club legend – if he isn’t already.
