Glasgow Rangers: Kevin Phillips believes Steven Gerrard will be working hard to find Morelos replacement

Glasgow Rangers: Kevin Phillips believes Steven Gerrard will be working hard to find Morelos replacement - Rangers News

Glasgow Rangers had a good start to the new Scottish Premiership season as they picked up a clean sheet and beat Aberdeen 1-0 at Pittodrie.

That win at least ensures that the ‘Gers have made a winning start and not lost ground on their title rivals from the get-go. Alfredo Morelos, who has been heavily linked with a move to Ligue 1 club Lille, started for Steven Gerrard’s side, so it looks like no matter how close the Colombian is to leaving, the manager will still utilise him.

It is easy to see why Gerrard will still use the 24-year-old, who is valued at £13.5m on Transfermarkt, as has enjoyed three fruitful seasons at the ‘Gers after joining from HJK Helsinki for £1.08m. He has been lethal at Ibrox, scoring 77 goals in 137 appearances in all competitions. Meanwhile, their other main striker Jermain Defoe is currently out with a hamstring injury.

Former Crystal Palace and Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips was speaking to Football Insider about the two players and said, “Everyone is talking about Rangers and Stevie G challenging this year so it is not ideal when you have Jermain out injured and Morelos potentially on the verge of a move. It cannot be good news.

“He might have to shift the squad around a bit if Morelos is to leave. Stevie will be working extremely hard to get someone in as quickly as possible.”

It’s hard to disagree with Phillips here, as Defoe and Morelos were crucial to the ‘Gers in the Premiership last season, scoring 25 league goals between them.

There is no doubt that Gerrard will be looking for a replacement if the Colombian departs and to bring someone in as quickly as possible, with the ‘Gers having already been linked with strikers Josh Maja and Lyndon Dykes.

Morelos would be a huge loss and this is proven by his remarkable goal tally at the club, but if he wants to leave, there is no reason to force him to stay as this might just ruin the morale of the squad.

It will definitely be an interesting transfer window for the ‘Gers as they wait to see if they can keep hold of the 24-year-old marksman.
