Glasgow Rangers get the 2020/21 Premiership season underway with a trip to Pittodrie to take on Aberdeen this lunchtime.
After a stormy summer which saw the ‘Gers accuse the SPFL of corruption over their handling of the league resolution proposal following the premature end to the 2019/20 campaign, and their unsuccessful attempts to launch an independent inquiry into the authority, the club’s supporters can finally turn their attention to on-field matters as a new season gets underway.
With Celtic not in action until tomorrow, Steven Gerrard’s side have the chance to lay down an early marker on their Glasgow rivals by claiming three points away to the Dons, a fixture which ended in a 2-2 draw last season.
The ‘Gers manager confirmed that Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis are his only injury absentees for the game at Pittodrie, giving him a near-full deck from which to choose.
Here is our predicted starting line-up for the Light Blues’ first match of the 2020/21 Premiership campaign:
The evergreen Allan McGregor is set for another season as the Light Blues’ first-choice goalkeeper, with a largely familiar back four ahead of him. The full-back duo of Borna Barisic and James Tavernier were firm favourites of Gerrard last term and are near-certain to start at Pittodrie, as is Connor Goldson, who played every single minute of the team’s 2019/20 Premiership campaign.
The 27-year-old could have a new central defensive partner, though, in summer signing Leon Balogun, who is also a former Brighton man now at Ibrox. The Nigeria international could be given his league debut for the ‘Gers today, with George Edmundson also pushing to start alongside Goldson.
Glen Kamara and Ryan Jack are likely to start in midfield, while the enforced absence of Davis could see Joe Aribo take up a role in the middle of the park. The former Charlton man enjoyed some success as a creative outlet when moved to a wide attacking role last season but may have a more withdrawn position against Aberdeen as needs must.
The two wingers are likely to be Ianis Hagi and Ryan Kent, with the Romanian now a fully-fledged ‘Gers player after making his initial loan move from Genk permanent. Alfredo Morelos could be called upon to lead the line despite reports of a £17m deal being agreed for his sale to Lille.
Do you think Morelos will feature against Aberdeen?
Defoe would probably have been given the nod to start at centre-forward had he not been injured but, with Greg Stewart seen by Gerrard as a reserve at best, the Colombian could start despite rumours of his impending exit from the club.
‘Gers fans, is this the line-up that you expect to see at Pittodrie this afternoon? Comment below with your views!
