Glasgow Rangers: Predicted XI to play St Mirren - Rangers News

Glasgow Rangers have had a rollercoaster of a journey in the last seven days. They started their Scottish Premiership 2020/21 campaign last weekend with a 1-0 victory over Aberdeen but were sadly knocked out of the Europa League on Thursday as they lost 1-0 to Bayer Leverkusen (4-1 on aggregate).

Steven Gerrard will hope that they can bounce back in this afternoon’s Premiership fixture against St Mirren but it might not be easy for the ‘Gers as their opponents are full of confidence following their 1-0 victory against Livingston. Here is Football Transfer Tavern’s predicted Light Blues XI for the match.

Filip Helander put in a good performance at the back against Bayer Leverkusen, as he picked up a 7.2 rating, won three of his four ground duels and made four clearances, per SofaScore, but he was only drafted in because new signing Leon Balogun was not registered to play in the Europa League.

With Connor Goldson and Balogun picking up a clean sheet in their first game together, the only change expected in the back four would be Helander out for Balogun, who won plaudits from pundits and many ‘Gers fans for his performance at Pittodrie last week.

Central midfielder Glen Kamara was suspended for the European fixture, so Gerrard will likely bring him back to sit in a midfield trio alongside Joe Aribo and Ryan Jack, which would see veteran Steven Davis lose his place in the starting lineup from Thursday.

From who did Rangers sign Alfredo Morelos?

Ianis Hagi was on the bench for the fixture against Leverkusen but this may have been due to the manager wanting some players fresh for the fixture against St Mirren. The Romanian featured on Thursday for 30 minutes and looked a real threat, making one key pass, completing both of his dribble attempts and winning two ground duels, per SofaScore.

The winger, who cost the club £3.15m, will most likely replace Brandon Barker, whose selection in midweek surprised many ‘Gers fans, and line up alongside Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent in attack, with the latter scoring the winner at Aberdeen last week.

Despite the ‘Gers signing forwards Cedric Itten and Kemar Roofe this week, there is no need for Gerrard to rush them into the starting XI with the front three that they currently posses, and they could be great options from the bench if needed.
