Noel Whelan believes that Glasgow Rangers and Steven Gerrard could well sell a big-name player following the news that the club made a loss of £15.9m during the last year.
Gerrard future could have impact
The Gers made that big loss during a difficult year for football clubs due to the pandemic. As such, there has been talk that the Ibrox outfit may need to move a star performer on to fill that gap on the balance sheet.
Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan said that Gerrard’s future and the return of fans could have a big impact on whether players depart. He said:
“It’s difficult, they’re gonna have a great season, they’re going to win the league, I know that anyway.
“It’s whether Steven Gerrard stays, I think that’s the key for some of the players. If Steven stays and he doesn’t get tapped up by a Premier League side – because people are looking at him now, they’re talking about him as this young manager that’s doing great things up in Scotland – sometimes it’s about the players wanting to play for a certain person.
“I think you’ll only see any kind of sale at the back end of the season, but then also, will fans be allowed back in as well? If they are, then they can catch up with that revenue without probably having to sell anybody. If not, you’ll have to sell somebody.”
Plenty of factors
As Whelan suggests, there are plenty of factors that come into play here. Gerrard is a big attraction for many players north of the border – Jack Wilshere said that he would only consider a move to the 54-time Scottish champions due to the former Liverpool captain being at the club. If he were to depart – and there has been interest from Leeds United recently – then others could well be thinking about leaving.
Do you think Gerrard will go to Leeds?
Of course, the lack of fans has damaged the coffers, but their return will not be a big enough reason to keep players there. This is really a question of whether the Gers need to sell – in an ideal world, they would never let a top player go. However, the lack of revenue in Scottish football compared to other leagues means the Gers are always open to a big-name departure. That, unfortunately, is just the way it is.
In other news, this Rangers man has been tipped to be sold.
