Glasgow Rangers continued their unbeaten run this season against Motherwell on Sunday.
The Gers won 5-1 at Fir Park thanks to braces from James Tavernier and Cedric Itten and a single goal from Jordan Jones. As it stands, the Gers remain top of the table, but they will drop down to second if Celtic win their game in hand.
Steven Gerrard is having to deal with a number of injuries at the moment, with Ryan Jack and Joe Aribo amongst those who are unavailable to the boss of the 54-time Scottish champions. Fortunately for the 40-year-old, though, veteran midfielder Scott Arfield stepped up to the plate this past weekend.
The £1.8m-valued 31-year-old Canada international – as per Transfermarkt – was starting just his third league match of the season, but he proved to be a star player on the day for the Gers. It was going forward where he impressed the most, completing 91% of his attempted passes, whilst also providing two assists.
Has Scott Arfield been a success at Rangers?
That is not to say that he was passive going in the opposite direction either, with him making two interceptions and blocking one shot. Arfield is unlikely to be a regular starter for Gerrard, but his performance showed the importance of having a strong squad full of quality. For however long the Gers are lacking in options in the middle of the park, Arfield will no doubt continue to be an important asset.
