Alan Hutton has said that a loan move for Glasgow Rangers’ Jamie Barjonas could be beneficial for the youngster, and he thinks that Steven Gerrard will want to see him depart on a temporary basis.
The 21-year-old has featured during pre-season, scoring in the 2-0 victory against Nice in the Veolia Trophy, but he has so far made just nine competitive appearances for the Gers. Other than that, he has 33 appearances to his name across loan spells with Raith Rovers, Bury and Partick Thistle.
Hutton – who used to play for the Gers – thinks that a short-term spell away from Ibrox is therefore on the cards for the midfielder. He told Football Insider:
“Look, it is difficult, we can’t kid ourselves – we’re going into such a crucial year for Rangers.
“It’s difficult for them to take chances but at the same time, if he goes out and proves to the manager he can handle these sorts of occasions then I don’t see why not.
“I must admit I probably think that Gerrard sees a lot of the youngsters, aside from (Nathan) Patterson probably, to probably go out on loan and get the game time that they need. They’re still so young before coming back and trying to integrate into the actual team.”
On the face of it, Hutton makes a good point – game time at this point is exactly what Barjonas needs. However, the issue is that his contract is set to run out next year, which means that this coming campaign is effectively his last opportunity to show Gerrard he has what it takes to make it at the 54-time Scottish champions.
Should Barjonas leave on loan?
As such, there is more pressure on Barjonas this time, and so it isn’t as simple as getting him game time elsewhere. It remains to be seen what happens for the youngster, but either way, he can not allow the next few months to pass him by.
