Glasgow Rangers started off their Europa League campaign against Lincoln Red Imps on Thursday.
The Gers made the round of 16 last term in this same competition, eventually losing to Bayer Leverkusen on aggregate. However, despite that, they had to start in the second round of qualifying this time around. Thankfully, they dispatched their opponents 5-0, with James Tavernier, Connor Goldson, Jermain Defoe and Alfredo Morelos – twice – all scoring.
They will now face Willem II next week. On Friday, the draw for the play-off round – the last one prior to the group stages – was made, and the Gers found out they will play Galatasaray or Hajduk Split if they beat their Dutch opponents next week.
Will Rangers make the group stages of the Europa League?
Whilst it is not a foregone conclusion, Galatasaray are expected to go through – they are one of the biggest names in Turkish football, with famously intimidating supporters. Given the reaction of the Gers fans, some seem disappointed that there will not be able to be any fans at Ibrox, whilst others believe it would be a tough match.
