Steven Gerrard has confirmed that Leon Balogun could miss Glasgow Rangers’ match against Livingston at the weekend.
Balogun only recently signed on a free transfer from Brighton, but he started both of the Gers’ first two Premiership matches in which they kept two clean sheets. The Ibrox outfit also didn’t concede in the first 45 minutes of their clash against St. Johnstone, which Balogun also started, but he was taken off at half-time to be replaced by Filip Helander.
After the match, Gerrard confirmed the Nigeria international had picked up an injury. He said:
“I think Balogun has a tight quad and we’ll get that looked at in [on Thursday] morning. He is definitely a concern for the weekend but we have real strong options in that area. Fil came on and played like an international player with experience.
“Hopefully it’s not a bad one. Leon walked past me earlier so I don’t think it’s anything major.”
Of course, another issue at centre-back following the loss of Nikola Katic is not good news for the 54-time Scottish champions, but the return of Helander is a boost. The Gers also didn’t concede in the second half as they won 3-0, so the boss knows he at least has reliable back-up.
Who would you rather start alongside Connor Goldson?
Still, given the way Balogun has settled in since joining, it is something the Glasgow side could rather do without. As Gerrard himself said, it is hopefully not a big issue.
