Alan Hutton has said that Glasgow Rangers winger Brandon Barker would be “unstoppable” if he added an end product to his game.
Barker made the move to Ibrox last year but so far he has failed to set the world alight. He has managed just 17 appearances in all competitions for the Gers’ and has bagged only one goal during his time at the club – that has led to intense criticism from portions of the club’s fan base.
However, he has started the last two matches and there have been some supporters who have praised him in recent weeks. Speaking to Football Insider, Hutton believes that an end product would make the 23-year-old a hugely important player for Gerrard. The former ‘Gers defender explained:
“Sometimes with quick players, they get into great positions because of their pace, but it’s then about taking control.
“Slow it down. See Kent, he’s got good pace but he’s also got good feet – he knows when to slow down, cut inside, put in a nice ball.
“I think that’s what Barker’s missing. The good thing is that Gerrard seems to trust him. He’s giving him the time, the run of games. He needed the run of games. He needs more ruthlessness – that final touch, that final pass.
“When he gets that he will be unstoppable on either wing. As a full-back, it’s the worst thing, someone who’s got good feet and good pace.”
Given the aforementioned stats, it is clearly something that Barker needs to add to his game. He is only 23 and came to Scotland from Manchester City, so he clearly has the raw qualities to become a success, but he will get nowhere if he is unable to contribute in the final third of the pitch.
Should Rangers sell Brandon Barker?
As Hutton explains, the good news is that Gerrard appears to trust the winger. Now, it is time for Barker to repay that faith.
