Alan Hutton has said that Glasgow Rangers manager Steven Gerrard will be desperate to have Cedric Itten back after it emerged that he has picked up an injury.
Itten signed for the ‘Gers for a reported £3m earlier this summer, but has so far failed to score in four games. However, he managed 19 strikes in 34 matches for St Gallen in the Swiss League last term, and with Alfredo Morelos’ future still up in the air, Gerrard will want the 23-year-old up and firing as soon as possible in case the Colombia international departs.
Speaking to Football Insider, Hutton has discussed Gerrard’s mindset in regards to the Swiss forward. He explained:
“This is the problem, when you sign for a team and you’re not fit at the beginning, or you miss a pre-season, it’s difficult because you’re trying so hard to get to a certain level.
“Obviously Roofe and himself were working incredibly hard, doing extra, playing games, bounce games, to get to the level of the rest of the team.
“It can always happen, it happens a lot, you push yourself that little bit too hard and then you have a setback. Ultimately it makes it even harder for you.
“With new signings like that it’s about taking your time, as much as you’re desperate to play, and we all know they are and Gerrard will be desperate, obviously with the Morelos situation, to get him fit and firing.
“Sometimes you have to give him the extra week. Maybe now it’s about stepping back, getting over the injury and then just work it how you need to to get him to a certain level.”
As Hutton says, this is not the start that anyone would have wanted. It is not clear whether the injury is serious, and it may even be a blessing in disguise that he now doesn’t need to travel for international duty with Switzerland, but it is far from promising that he has picked up an injury so early into the season.
Have you been impressed by Itten so far?
Hopefully Itten is back as soon as possible – the last thing anyone at Ibrox wants is for this to turn into a more serious, or repetitive, problem.
