Alan Hutton has urged Glasgow Rangers manager Steven Gerrard to sign Jacob Murphy this summer.
The ‘Gers have been linked with a move for the winger, who spent last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday. His current employers Newcastle signed him for £12m in 2017, but a solitary goal in 41 appearances has done little to show that he can cut it in the Premier League.
However, Hutton believes that he would be a good signing for the 54-time Scottish champions. He told Football Insider:
“A great signing for Newcastle and that’s the flip side to it, I think that kind of paves the way for him (Murphy) to possibly move out.
“Rangers would be in contact and they would know exactly what was going on with the Fraser situation so if they’re still looking to bring in a winger, I think it’s the perfect time to go and contact Newcastle.
“It would look like his days are numbered with the players coming in. It would be as good a time as any to go and have a bash at getting him. I think he’s a good player, he’s had to go out on a few loans and things haven’t quite worked out for him at Newcastle.
“He’ll be looking for a home, he’s got plenty of football left in him, he’s still young, he’s still hungry so it’s the kind of player I think Rangers will be looking at, with potential, probably hasn’t reached the peak of his potential.
“Maybe Gerrard’s thinking he can help him along the way, I think it would be a good signing, he would add to the squad, he’s definitely going to fight hard for his place and make people work harder around him so it’s a no-brainer for me.”
Ryan Fraser’s move to St. James’ Park appears to be the end of Murphy at the Tyneside club – after all, they now have the £15.75m-valued Scotland international and Allan St. Maximin on the left wing, meaning that a third option is unlikely to be necessary.
Would you like to sign Jacob Murphy?
With nine goals for the Owls last term, Murphy has shown that he can be prolific, and that is the kind of form he must take to Glasgow if he makes the move to Ibrox, rather than his toothless Newcastle sojourn.
