Alan Hutton has urged Glasgow Rangers to allow Lewis Mayo out on loan now he has signed a new contract at the club.
The 20-year-old is yet to make a professional first team appearance for the ‘Gers but he is highly-rated at Ibrox and has recently put pen to paper on a three-year contract with the 54-time Scottish champions. As a central defender, he has his work cut out getting into Steven Gerrard’s starting XI, with Connor Goldson, Filip Helander, George Edmundson, Leon Balogun and Nikola Katic all standing in his way when fit.
As such, Hutton believes Mayo should continue his development away from the ‘Gers on a short-term basis. He told Football Insider:
“Obviously Gerrard speaks very highly of him, that’s he’s definitely one for the future and that they expect him to be in and about the squad.
“I think now, he’s signed the contract, let him go out on loan. He had a successful loan at Partick Thistle last season and then now it’s about topping that up, maybe going to an even higher level, maybe another Premiership team and playing that 30-game season.
“Really kind of bedding yourself into the Scottish League and then after that, he’ll obviously be looking to challenge the first-team players because he’s got a good standard in front of him.
“Obviously Goldson’s the number one, you’ve got Balogun, Helander and Edmundson fighting it out for that other position so it’s going to be tough for him.
“When the manager has that high praise for you, he’s obviously got something, so it’s just about him concentrating on his football now and playing games.”
It is quite obvious that what Mayo now needs is regular game-time, and that is something he is unlikely to obtain with the 54-time Scottish champions. So far he has made just three first team appearances, all with Partick Thistle whilst on loan at Firhill.
Do you think Lewis Mayo will be a first-team regular in the future?
He does have a future with the ‘Gers, but only if he is primed and ready to make an impact. A loan spell should give him the confidence and the experience to do just that.
