Former Glasgow Rangers defender Alan Hutton believes that Daniel Johnson could be exactly the midfielder Steven Gerrard has been looking for.
The Gers have been linked with a move for the £2.52m-valued 27-year-old – as per Transfermarkt – who currently plays for Preston North End in the English Championship. In the previous campaign, he scored 12 goals and provided eight assists in the league, and could fit the bill as Gerrard looks to add a new player in the middle of the park to his squad.
Talking to Football Insider, Hutton believes it could be a fantastic piece of business if Ross Wilson and co are able to secure the Jamaican’s services. He explained:
“Gerrard obviously mentioned after the game that he was looking for a midfielder.
“Obviously I know Daniel Johnson from his time at Villa, so I was very surprised at the time when Villa let him go, I thought it was very early, I thought they could have held onto him to see where he went in his career.
“He’s gone to Preston and he’s been unbelievable, done unbelievably well. Last season he played as a number 10 and I think the numbers are there for everyone to see, he’s done really well, but he’s also a number eight in my opinion, he can do both.
“Whether Gerrard’s looking at this move thinking he can do the number 10 or higher up in an advanced position but he can also be the midfielder that he’s looking for, that driving run into the box, scoring goals – I think he could do that as well.
“Round about the number 10 position they’ve got options so I think Daniel Johnson could fit into that number eight role that he’s looking for. Overall, I think it would be a great move.”
As Brian Laudrup has previously said, the Gers are missing creativity in midfield other than Joe Aribo, who is currently out injured for up to six weeks – as such, Johnson could well be a fantastic signing if the Ibrox outfit are able to get it over the line.
Would you like to sign Daniel Johnson?
It has been reported that Preston are looking for more than £4m – that is a substantial fee. However, sometimes, you need to take a gamble when in search of a major trophy. Johnson’s arrival could make all the difference.
