Lille president Gerard Lopez has admitted that his club have had offers for Jonathan Ikone, which could directly affect their interest in Glasgow Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos.
Morelos has been a target throughout the summer for the Ligue 1 outfit, with the Colombia international even said to have agreed personal terms with Les Dogues. However, the signing of Jonathan David has appeared to cool any interest in the 24-year-old – the Canada international joined Burak Yilmaz and Ikone, who plays in an attacking midfield/second striker role, meaning they already had plenty of attacking options.
However, the potential departure of £32.4m-valued Ikone – as per Transfermarkt – could mean Lille have to go back into the transfer market. Lopez told Telefoot (as per The Scottish Sun) about the 22-year-old:
“He [Ikone] is an interesting player, and that’s the problem! He has the ability to make a huge difference, he’s a player who is in the France team.”
“Everyone has to agree on the way to move forward – there are big offers for him. I’ll sit down with the players and their entourages this week. We’ve had offers for (Renato) Sanches and (Luiz) Araujo, which we turned down.
“We need to sit down with the players and talk about it, aside from Boubakary (Soumare) who is a player I love but who has to be patient because we only play two in the middle. The door’s open for him if he wants to leave, but for the rest, we need to discuss things.”
Morelos and Ikone are not the same type of player. The latter is more of a creative outlet, managing 16 assists in the two previous seasons combined, whilst he scored only six goals. However, any departure of the France U21 international would leave Lille with plenty of money to spend, as well as a hole up front.
Will Morelos still be at Rangers by the end of the transfer window?
They would likely need to bring in another creative player as well, but it could push Lille to make another concrete move for Morelos – Lopez has already admitted they have had a bid of £16m rejected. It remains to be seen what the future holds.
