Alan Hutton has urged Steven Gerrard to name Cedric Itten in his starting XI against Lincoln Red Imps in the Europa League on Thursday.

The 'Gers signed the 23-year-old for a reported £3m earlier on this summer, but so far he has yet to set the world alight. He has failed to score in each of his first four matches, and an injury obtained at the start of the international break will not have helped.

However, he managed 20 goals in 36 games at St. Gallen last term and Hutton believes that he should be given the chance to prove himself against the team from Gibraltar tomorrow. He told Football Insider:

"I would like to see Itten come in. Yes, he’s played games, he’s picked up a little injury but he needs to get up to speed.

"I think if Morelos does leave, I would personally play him as the number nine with Roofe off him and then either Barker or Aribo to the right and Kent, who has been outstanding, to the left.

"That would be my attacking front four and I think a lot of teams would be nervous so I’d like to see Itten get more game time and get him up to speed."

It could be the perfect opportunity for Itten to get off the mark. Whilst Gerrard will be wary of the threat carried by the Imps - they beat Celtic four years ago in a Champions League qualifier, after all - the 'Gers are strong favourites to progress to the next round.

As such, £3.6m-valued Itten could do with getting some much-needed game-time and confidence under his belt. The first goal is always the hardest to come - if he can get off the mark in Gibraltar, the goals could then flow for him.
