Steven Gerrard has confirmed that new Glasgow Rangers signing Cedric Itten has picked up a calf injury in training and will be on the sidelines for the next couple of weeks.
Itten recently made the move from St. Gallen to Ibrox for around £3m, but has so far failed to set the world alight. In his first four matches, only one of which he has started, he has failed to score a single goal. Still, after scoring 19 times in 34 games in the Swiss league last term, Gerrard will be hoping he can soon hit the ground running.
Unfortunately, he may have to wait a while, as he confirmed the forward’s injury following the match against Hamilton. He said:
“Itten has got an injury he picked up yesterday in training. It’s a calf problem so we will assess that but it looks like he will miss a couple of weeks and won’t be going on international duty.”
Of course, a two-week injury lay-off during the international break means that he could essentially be available for the next Gers match anyway, but it doesn’t really work like that – 14 days without any training means he will lose match sharpness, and he will have to work that back up to its previous levels.
Have you been impressed by Itten so far?
Still, with Kemar Roofe available and Gerrard hoping that Jermain Defoe will be back for the next clash as well, the Gers should have plenty of alternative options.
