Glasgow Rangers: Noel Whelan discusses Alfredo Morelos’ future

Glasgow Rangers: Noel Whelan discusses Alfredo Morelos’ future - Rangers News

Noel Whelan believes that Alfredo Morelos will continue to play for Glasgow Rangers as long as he is at the club, but added that as soon as the ‘Gers receive an acceptable offer, they will likely let him depart.

The speculation surrounding the Colombia international’s future refuses to go away – the 24-year-old has reportedly agreed personal terms with Ligue 1 side Lille – but it appears to be having a negative impact on his performances for the Ibrox outfit. He has managed to scored twice this term in the Premiership but those both came in the same match against St. Mirren – he has drawn blanks in the three other matches that the ‘Gers have played in the league.

Who scored more goals for the Gers?

Talking to Football Insider, Whelan discussed Morelos’ situation and, when asked if he could make the step up to Serie A – he has been linked with AC Milan – the ex-Aberdeen said:

“He would – but Steven has said before that there has been no contract, no firm offers for Morelos.

“Until an offer has been accepted and agreed by two clubs, he’s going to keep using him because you can’t afford to not have your best players on the field.

“While he’s a Rangers player, he will get played because he is the best striker at the club. You need players like that to win matches. You might as well utilise what you’ve got right now.

“But look, I think Steven will cross that bridge when he comes to it. I think he’s probably aware that if a bid comes in and it’s acceptable, they will let him go.”

It certainly feels like a matter of when rather than if in regards to the star striker leaving his current employers. Morelos himself has opened the door to an exit away from Ibrox with his comments recently, and given his record of 79 goals in 142 matches for the ‘Gers, there should be plenty of suitors who would love to add his goalscoring ability to their squads.

Will Morelos still be at Rangers by the end of the transfer window?

The ‘Gers reportedly want £20m for the player on whom they spent just £1.08m in 2017 – either way, they are likely to make a large profit. For the good of dressing room harmony, Steven Gerrard will surely want this situation to be resolved quickly.
