Journalist Alan Nixon has suggested that Glasgow Rangers could make a pre-contract move for John Lundstram as early as January.

The Gers have been linked with the Sheffield United midfielder, with his contract set to run out next summer - they were reportedly one of three clubs looking at signing him for this term. Lundstram was an important player for Chris Wilder's side in the previous campaign, playing in 34 matches in the Premier League whilst scoring five goals.

Nixon has now provided an update on the £7.2m-valued 26-year-old (as per Transfermarkt), and he says that whilst the Ibrox outfit are now unlikely to land him in this window, they could make a move in less than six months. He explained:

SHEFF U. Looks like Lundstram stays. Buyers holding back when free in a year. RANGERS have an interest and could pre-contract as early as January.

Given his market value, Lundstram could have set the 54-time Scottish champions back a pretty penny - signing him on a free transfer would be incredible business. After all, he has experience in the top flight, and at his age his peak years are likely still in front of him.

If no new deal is signed soon, the Gers are unlikely to be the only side interested in adding him to their squad. Their longer pursuit, though, could give them the upper hand.
