Kemar Roofe had to be taken off in Glasgow Rangers’ Europa League qualifying match last week in the first half with an injury, and manager Steven Gerrard has confirmed he will be out for a short period.
Obviously every manager in football would like to have a fully fit squad for the whole season, but this is very unlikely to happen and so the club will have to adjust without him until he returns.
The forward, who signed this summer from Belgian side Anderlecht, will be hoping to return as soon as possible to prove he was a worthwhile signing. Former forward Noel Whelan has been discussing the injury, and he believes this could be a big loss for the Gers as they battle for the Scottish Premiership.
Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan said: “It is a massive blow but the good news is that they have Defoe back now. They also have Morelos who is on fire at the moment. That is one negative and two positives for Steven Gerrard now.
“We know what Defoe is like when he is fully fit, he can get goals from anywhere. He is a natural goalscorer.
“Morelos is working hard and it seems like the relationship between him and Steven Gerrard is getting better. He is scoring goals and when strikers are scoring goals they are happy wherever they are. It was a brilliant finish from him yesterday.”
The 27 year-old, who the Scottish side signed for £4.5 million, per Transfermarkt, has had a decent start to life at the club, as he has scored two goals in six appearances (including two appearances from the bench).
He also has a very decent goal scoring tally throughout his career as he has managed 98 goals and also picked up 50 assists in 308 appearances. Therefore to lose a talisman will definitely have an impact.
With Roofe having to go for a scan, the manager has Alfredo Morelos, Cedric Itten and Jermain Defoe as his available attackers. This would normally sound like he still has some depth, but Defoe has only recently returned from a hamstring injury so he is still battling to get match fit, and so it leaves the club with just two fully fit options.
They are lucky that Defoe has returned otherwise the Roofe injury would have definitely worried Gerrard as Itten and Greg Stewart have not scored this season so it would have just really left Morelos as their only prolific attacker as he has managed three goals and two assists in six League appearances.
