Kevin Phillips has urged Bright Osayi-Samuel to stay in England rather than make the move to Glasgow Rangers.
The ‘Gers have been linked with a move for the winger, who currently plays for QPR in the Championship. He was in impressive form for the London-based side last season, scoring five goals and providing nine assists in 37 league matches; and as such, he could be on the move this summer. Along with the Ibrox outfit, Celtic and Crystal Palace have also been mentioned as possible destinations.
Speaking to Football Insider, Phillips says he would rather see him stay in England rather than move north of the border. He explained:
“It would be a big signing for one of those do but I would like to see the kid stay in England. Those two clubs will be playing European football and that is a big draw.
“The kid did so well last year I think he deserves a crack at one of the lower Premier League sides and I am sure there are a few sniffing around. I would like to see him develop in the Premier League because he did so well last season.
“If Rangers or Celtic got hold of the kid they would be getting a very exciting young player.”
Whilst it is understandable that Phillips would want a top talent to stay in England, he could do an awful lot worse than joining the 54-time Scottish champions. Although the level of the competition may not be as high as the English top tier, the pressure with the ‘Gers can reveal a lot about a player’s character – they are expected to at the very least challenge for the Premiership title. Not only that, the ‘Gers will be playing European football this season, and the chance to play for Steven Gerrard should not be underestimated either.
Would you like to sign Bright Osayi-Samuel?
Previously, QPR agreed a deal with Club Brugge for £5m before it fell through – whether Ross Wilson and co could afford to make such an investment is up for debate. However, if Osayi-Samuel were to move to Scotland, it should not be detrimental to his career. If anything, playing for a club in Europe who are also contending for domestic honours could work in his favour.
