Kevin Phillips has urged Steven Gerrard to try and convince John Lundstram to join Glasgow Rangers, saying it would be a massive coup to take him north of the border.
The Gers have been linked with the midfielder recently – The Athletic say the Ibrox outfit are one of three clubs monitoring the 26-year-old, who has just one year left on his contract with Sheffield United. Last term, he made 34 appearances for the Blades in the Premier League, managing five goals and three assists.
Talking to Football Insider, Phillips believes it would be a huge signing for Gerrard. He said:
“Without a shadow of a doubt. If Steve G can secure his services, wow.
“You would certainly think that Rangers will go very close to challenging Celtic right the way to the end of the season for the title, but if it becomes clear that the player is going to move, it wouldn’t surprise me if there might be one or two Premier League clubs sniffing around to nick that deal.
“We saw how he performed in the Premier League this year. The league up there hasn’t got the same quality, so you would like to think that he would shine even more.
“So yeah, that would be a massive coup if they could get him to go there.”
It is hard to disagree with Phillips at all. Lundstram now has a whole campaign of Premier League experience under his belt, and that came for a side that more than held its own in their first year back in the top flight as they finished in ninth place.
Would you like to sign Lundstram?
At 26 years old, he is arguably not yet in his prime years – it would be massive for the Gers to convince him to join them at this time in his career. Currently valued at £7.2m by Transfermarkt, any potential transfer fee could be an obstacle, but it should not stop Ross Wilson from doing all he can to complete a transfer.
