Former Glasgow Rangers player Mark Walters believes that Ryan Kent must score one goal every four games to be a success at Ibrox.
Kent made the move to Glasgow on a permanent deal last summer for the fee of £7m after he spent a season on loan with the 54-time Scottish champions. So far, he has scored 15 goals in 78 matches in all competitions, and there have been concerns that the Gers overpaid for the winger.
Walters though, does believe he has the quality needed to make it with the Gers – however, he must be more productive in front of goal. He explained:
“I have been very impressed with Ryan Kent. He’s a terrific signing – a great young player with great attributes.
“He is equally comfortable off his left and right foot and has scored some good goals. I think he will have a very important role this season. It doesn’t matter what level you play at having a winger who creates and scores goals is key.
“If Rangers can keep him fit and his confidence high, as he is a confidence player, then he will be a vital cog for Rangers winning trophies this season. You have to remember, I was playing with some great players. With all respect the Rangers lads just now, they are still bedding in.
“It is a bit more difficult at the moment but he certainly has the potential to score more goals. His ratio has to be at least one goal in four if you are playing in that position. Centre forwards can’t always score the goals so you have to chip in. I actually managed to get Ally McCoist off the penalties so that helped me get a few more as well. He definitely needs to score more as that will make him a better player.
“Scoring goals increases your confidence and that is something he can struggle with.”
£3.15m-valued Kent – as per Transfermarkt – is certainly a player Gerrard will look to for inspiration this campaign. After all, they parted with a significant sum to take him north of the border, and as the Gers look for their first piece of major silverware since 2011, the former Liverpool man is bound to have a big role to play.
Has Ryan Kent been a success so far?
He is already off the mark this term, at least, having scored the only goal of the game against Aberdeen at Pittodrie on the opening game of the season – as Walters says, he must now continue to find the back of the net on a regular basis.
