Graeme Shinnie has said that despite his agent asking whether Glasgow Rangers were interested in signing him before he moved to Aberdeen, the Gers made it clear they were not interested in the Scotland international.
Shinnie played for the Dons between 2015 and 2019, moving to Pittodrie from Inverness Caledonian Thistle, but before that switch his agent enquired to see whether either of the Old Firm would be interested in signing him. In the end though, neither were.
Talking to Open Goal, he explained:
“Rangers weren’t interested, Celtic were sniffing about.
“I got my agent to ask what the situation was and they said basically just now it’s a no.
“I wasn’t pestering to go there. Yogi (John Hughes) was good friends with John Collins and he was maybe saying to them ‘you have to take him’.”
Shinnie, who now currently plays for Derby County in the English Championship, did relatively well with his former club. He made 188 appearances in all all competitions, scoring 12 goals and providing 25 assists. However, the 54-time Scottish champions have Borna Barisic in his position, who created 14 strikes last season alone – £1.08m-valued Shinnie (as per Transfermarkt) is not a player they have been crying out for.
