Glasgow Rangers manager Steven Gerrard will have to make some decisions on who stays at the club and who leaves as the transfer window draws to a close on October 5th.
One out of favour star linked with a move away might have made his prospects of staying at the club more likely following their Europa League victory against Willem last night.
In the past, Sky Sports have reported that Championship sides Middlesbrough, QPR and Preston are in a three-way battle to sign Glasgow Rangers man Jordan Jones.
However Gerrard’s latest comments following the game against Willem seem to suggest the player could stay at the club past this transfer window, as he said to RangersTV: “I thought our subs were positive. JJ, you can see, giving us that oxygen at the end, he looked a real threat and Ceddy (Cedric Itten) was holding it up for us, trying to be that link man.
“The recovery starts now and people who were on the outside today and people who were around the squad have to be ready because we have to make sure that everyone comes through that and then we’ll have a game plan ready for Motherwell. It’ll be another tough test.”
Jones was yet to play a single minute for the Gers so far this campaign until the match against Willem where the 18 minutes he was on the pitch were his first of the campaign. This highlights how he does seem to be very much on the fringes of the squad.
He has been at the club since July 2019, per Transfermarkt, but the left-winger has only featured 16 times, assisting two goals along the way.
The 25 year-old has been capped nine times by Northern Ireland so he definitely has some pedigree, per Transfermarkt, but before Gerrard’s latest comments, you definitely would have thought he was surplus to requirements. All Jones can do is prove himself when given the opportunities and he clearly did that last night.
The Gers have four different competitions to fight in this campaign, and Jones’ cameo last night would have possibly made the manager think that he is a good player to have for squad depth.
