Whilst Noel Whelan believes that the reported £8m transfer fee for Ivan Toney might be too steep for Glasgow Rangers, he believes that he would be worth the risk.
Toney was in stunning form for Peterborough before the 2019/20 League One campaign was brought to a premature close – he managed 24 goals in 32 matches in the league, which was eight more than any other player in the division – and those displays have attracted the attention of the ‘Gers.
There have been plenty of reports as to what amount Posh want for the 24-year-old, but the latest fee is said to be £8m. Whelan thinks that this is a large sum but feels that the ‘Gers should gamble. He told Football Insider:
“It might be too much for Rangers but I do not think it would be a risk because he could easily make the step up to the Scottish Premiership.
“We are not talking about going to the Premier League. At the Old Firm clubs you are going to score goals because you are going to get chances.
“It might be too steep for them with him being a League One player but when you look at the going rate for goalscorer it is not terrible. You are not breaking the bank.
“They can structure the payments over three to four years.
“He is a goalscorer and you have got to pay money for a goalscorer.”
No-one can deny that £8m is a big fee for any club in Scotland – even now, Tore Andre Flo’s move to Ibrox from Chelsea at the start of the 21st century remains the biggest-ever fee paid by a club in the Scottish Premiership at £12m.
Would you like to sign Ivan Toney?
However, a move for Toney could very well depend on Alfredo Morelos’ future – the ‘Gers are apparently expecting him to leave this summer and want £15m for his services. Should they manage to bring in that kind of money, there is no reason why they could not afford the Peterborough man.
It promises to be an interesting summer at Ibrox!
