Glasgow Rangers’ forgotten man Glenn Middleton racked up three assists for Scotland’s U21s on Tuesday, against San Marino in a 7-0 win.
The Tartan Army were in action against the European minnows as they attempt to qualify for the next European Championships. Despite not playing a single minute for Rangers so far this campaign, Middleton still earned a starting spot, and he took full advantage of his opportunity.
In the end, he managed to create three goals as Scotland hammered their opponents. He wasn’t the only one to impress – fellow Gers starlets Nathan Patterson and Stephen Kelly also provided one assists apiece.
Showing Gerrard what he is missing
Middleton currently looks completely out of favour at Ibrox. Not only is he not getting any game time with Rangers, but he has not even secured a loan move away from the club for the term.
His time north of the border started well after moving from Norwich City. In his first season, the 2018/19 campaign, he scored five times and provided five assists in 28 matches. However, since then, he has not made a single appearance under Steven Gerrard.
Does Glenn Middleton have a future at Rangers?
This display, though, does at least show that Middleton has plenty of talent, and at the age of 20, time is on his side to prove that he has what it takes to make it at Rangers. Both Jordan Jones and Brandon Barker have worked their way into Gerrard’s plans after seemingly looking to be nothing but bit-part players – Middleton must look to them for inspiration.
