Glasgow Rangers have had Steven Gerrard as their manager for just over two years, which seems a fair amount of time to judge how the former Liverpool legend has done during his tenure.
Among those assessing the 40-year-old’s managerial reign is former Scotland player Kenny Dalglish, who has been praising the manager for what he has done so far at Ibrox.
He told Go Radio, via Glasgow Live: “I think Rangers have got stronger over the seasons since Steven has been there. He’s brought a few players in and the ones that he’s not been happy are starting to be moved out now.
“He’s certainly been given the support and Steven has reacted and responded by making them a lot stronger. In the Betfred Cup Final last year they were desperately unlucky not to beat Celtic. When you consider Morelos missed the penalty and Jullien scores with a header that could have been ruled out.
“It just tells you that you have got your disappointment and you can’t rest on that. You have to just go out the next week, roll your sleeves up and try again. And they are getting closer and closer to competing with Celtic.
“They still have it all to do because Celtic are fantastic and Lenny is doing a fantastic job second time around and they are going for another three trophies plus the cup ties from last year.
“They were unlucky to get knocked out of the Champions League but last year they had a great European run so both of them have represented Scotland well in the European trophies last year.
“Hopefully they can do the same this year. If you look there are two club sides that get all the publicity – Celtic and Rangers. One will be doing better than the other. So the one that is not doing so well will get crucified.”
It is hard to agree that the ‘Gers are getting closer and closer to Old Firm rivals Celtic since Gerrard took over as they finished third the season before he arrived and second in both of his campaigns in charge, per SPFL.
He also took the Light Blues to the last 16 of the Europa League last term, their best performance in a European competition since 2011, per Transfermarkt.
Their good form has continued this season as well as they currently sit top of the Premireship on 20 points, but they might regret the two draws they have had as Celtic could go above them if they win their game in hand, per SPFL.
That they are back at the top competing highlights the good job that Gerrard has done and hopefully he can enjoy another strong European campaign as well as mounting a genuine title challenge or winning a trophy domestically.
