Rangers: Pete O'Rourke says Gers will be 'concerned' by Leon King transfer news - Follow up

Journalist Pete O’Rourke says that Glasgow Rangers will be ‘concerned’ by some recent transfer news involving Leon King.

The Lowdown: Premier League scouting

It was reported earlier this week that three clubs in the Premier League have sent scouts to watch King in action ahead of a potential move in the January transfer window.

Leeds United, Newcastle United and Manchester United are the clubs monitoring his situation at Ibrox, and he is out of contract in 2024.

The Latest: Rangers ‘concerned’

Speaking to GiveMeSport, O’Rourke has claimed that Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side will be ‘concerned’ with King’s links to some of the top teams in the Premier League, and will be ‘hoping’ that they can persuade him to stay:

“You’re obviously going to be concerned if your players are being linked with some of the top clubs in the Premier League because if it comes down to finance, Rangers won’t be able to compete with the clubs in the English Premier League.

“That’s a no-brainer really, as well, and they’ll be hoping they’ll be able to keep hold of Leon King by offering him regular first-team football.

“He’s now got a pathway into the first-team at Rangers, he’s playing in the Champions League, so that’s what Giovanni van Bronckhorst will be hoping that he might be able to use to his advantage to try and persuade Leon King to stay.”

The Verdict: New contract?

With only a couple of years to run on his current deal, added to the speculation over his future, the Gers need to give King a new contract as soon as possible.

He has played ten times already in all competitions so far this season despite being just 18 years of age, and has repaid the faith that Van Bronckhorst has shown in him after allowing senior central defenders Calvin Bassey and Leon Balogun to leave in the summer,

Nonetheless, with Ben Davies and Connor Goldson’s recent injuries, King is the only recognised fit centre-back available in the senior squad at the moment, and so could really establish himself as a key player in the team from now until the end of the campaign.
