Rangers: Gers in ‘big trouble’ over goalkeeper situation

Rangers: Gers in ‘big trouble’ over goalkeeper situation -Rangers News

Former Scottish Premiership striker turned pundit Frank McAvennie believes Glasgow Rangers are in ‘big trouble’ with their goalkeeper situation.

The Lowdown: Goalkeeper signing?

It was reported on Thursday that the Ibrox outfit have set aside ‘significant’ funds for a new goalkeeper signing, and could do a deal in the January transfer window.

They are ‘prioritising’ a move for a ‘proven’ shot-stopper, with Allan McGregor and Jon McLaughlin not getting any younger at 40 and 35 years of age respectively.

The Latest: McAvennie reacts

Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie has claimed that Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side are in ‘big trouble’ in terms of their goalkeeping situation, adding that he has ‘heard’ that they do not have enough money to buy new players:

McLaughlin has been in and Gio fancied him and kept him in.

He cost them points and he cost them goals. At the moment he is not better than McGregor who is 40. There will come a day where he can’t do it anymore.

I do not think McLaughlin is a good back up for McGregor. He has had a couple of howlers. I think they are in big trouble. I do not know if they have got the money to bring someone in.

From what I heard the directors want some of the money from the Champions League back. If that is true, there is no money there to buy players.

The Verdict: Younger goalkeeper needed

As much of a good servant as McGregor has been to the club, the Gers need to think about recruiting a younger goalkeeper given his and McLaughlin’s respective ages.

24-year-old Robby McCrorie is also on their books, but he has only ever made two first-team appearances for the Light Blues, and none so far this term.

The long-term plan for them should be to move on both McGregor and McLaughlin swiftly, and bring in a younger but still proven ‘keeper to compete with McCrorie.

However, it may be more difficult to find who they are looking for in January, and so the Teddy Bears could be forced to wait until the end of the season.
