Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor is set to leave the club at the end of the season, according to a report from Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Loyal servant

McGregor has been a fantastic servant to the Gers, making a total of 475 appearances for the club, with 68 of these coming in European competition, and he has still managed to get regular game time this season.

Despite being 41, the goalkeeper has made 16 appearances in the Scottish Premiership, displacing Jon McLaughlin as the club's first-choice, however his contract is up in the summer, and it now appears as though it will not be extended.

The Latest: Set to leave

According to a report from Football Insider, the stalwart is almost certain to end his playing career at the end of the season, and Rangers have already started to identify suitable replacements.

That does not necessarily mean his time at Ibrox is over, however, as the report also states that the 41-year-old could agree a coaching role at the end of the campaign.

The Verdict: Correct decision

While there is no doubting that the 42-time Scotland international is a club legend, the time is right for him to hang up his gloves at the end of the season, given his age.

The former Hull City man is clearly still very talented, given that he has managed to keep McLaughlin out of the team for large parts of the the season, but Michael Beale needs a more suitable long-term option.

Hailed as 'outstanding' by journalist Josh Bunting, McGregor will still be a dependable option for the remainder of the campaign, but Beale should now start assessing his options, and reports suggest Norwich City goalkeeper Angus Gunn is one potential replacement.
