Rangers should have moved for Kevin Nisbet by topping Millwall's accepted bid for the striker, claims Barry Ferguson.

The Lowdown: Nisbet in demand

The Daily Record has reported that the Hibernian ace is set to leave after a fee worth up to £2.5m was agreed with the Lions.

Millwall had seen previous bids rejected for the 25-year-old, who has bagged seven goals in just six SPFL games this season after hitting the ground running following his return from a cruciate ligament rupture.

Nisbet has had an incredible rise up the leagues in Scotland, with him scoring in all of the top four tiers and has since made himself at home in the top flight, with 34 goals and 12 assists since joining Hibs in 2020.

The Latest: Ferguson’s comments

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show, former Rangers captain Ferguson urged his old club to make a move for the Scotsman at the 11th hour amid the interest from south of the border.

He said: “I just think at the price that's getting bandied about, because Millwall came in [at] £1.1m or £1.2m and that gets thrown out the door; they’ve come back with £2m plus add-ons.

“For me, I wouldn't shy away from going for Kevin Nisbet - even if Morelos goes in this window or he stays in the summer, we don't know what's going to happen with him. But in terms of Kevin Nisbet, I think he's a fantastic player.”

The Verdict: 11th-hour swoop?

Rangers may well have passed up the opportunity to sign the ideal Alfredo Morelos alternative, with Nisbet's goalscoring return seeing him bag 100 career goals at just 25.

Despite the prospective transfer fee beating Millwall’s current transfer record, a £2.5m sum wouldn’t have looked out of place for Michael Beale’s side to stump up.

With Antonio Colak arriving in the summer as a relative unknown from Greece for £1.8m plus add-ons (via Sky Sports), it’s surprising not to see the Gers cough up a bit more for a proven SPFL goalscorer, who at his age, still has plenty of years to offer.

It could even prove damaging in the end if they don’t act quickly, with the Daily Record also reporting that Morelos has been offered to Inter by his agent, leaving the Gers to potentially miss out on a possible successor.
