The Lowdown: 10 out of contract
There are as many as ten players going out of contract at Ibrox in the summer, with both James Sands and Malik Tillman also set to return to their respective clubs after loan spells if Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side do not trigger an option to buy.
Some of the expiring deals are players who are very established in the first-team squad, with the likes of Scott Arfield, Ryan Kent and Ryan Jack making over ten appearances so far this season.
The Latest: Want to keep…
Speaking to GiveMeSport, O’Rourke has shared that the Gers ‘want to keep’ some of the players going out of contract, mainly the ‘established’ names:
“Rangers want to keep some of those players as well, though.
“You want established, experienced players in the squad as well as fresh faces. Obviously, Rangers did do quite a bit of business in the summer transfer window to freshen things up.”
The Verdict: Need to move fast
If the Light Blues want to tie down as many of these players as possible, then they need to move fast.
The January transfer window is only a couple of months away, and players can then sign for foreign clubs on a pre-contract agreement, should a new deal not be signed before then.
They will not want to lose the likes of Kent and Alfredo Morelos, who hold sizeable market values, on free transfers, and so big decisions will have to be made over whether to sell them in January, or keep them in the hope that they will eventually sign a new contract.
