Rangers bloggers Four Lads Had A Dream have raised 'huge doubts' over the decision to award Allan McGregor a new contract.

The lowdown

It was confirmed on Monday that veteran goalkeeper McGregor has signed a new one-year deal at Ibrox.

The 40-year-old's previous contract had expired, and so it looked like his time at Rangers may be up.

But manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst pushed for a renewal, explaining that 'it is important to have players in our dressing room who really understand the club'.

McGregor came the youth ranks at Rangers around the turn of the century, with his first spell at the club lasting until 2012, when he joined Besiktas. After subsequent spells with Hull City and Cardiff City, he returned to the Glasgow club in 2018.

In all, he's made 446 appearances for The Light Blues, keeping 204 clean sheets.

Last season, he started 29 of Rangers' 38 Scottish Premiership matches and 14 of their Europa League games, including the final against Eintracht Frankfurt in Seville.

The latest

Four Lads Had A Dream stressed that 'McGregor is a Rangers legend' and that his 'legacy [is] safe as one of the greatest' to wear the shirt. But they questioned the award of an extension on the basis of his displays in 2021/22.

"I have huge doubts over this extension & his recent domestic performances," the tweet read.

"[It would] be wrong to write him off completely, but we need more than what we saw domestically last season."

The verdict

There's no doubting McGregor's iconic status at the club. He's helped them win four SPFL titles, four Scottish Cups and five Scottish League Cups.

And on an individual level, he was named Player of the Year in 2020/21 when they stopped Celtic from winning 10 in a row.

4LHAD aren't the only ones to raise concerns about his performances, with pundit Charlie Nicholas writing in March that he's 'now looking really vulnerable' and suggesting he should have retired in 2021.

And The Athletic's Jordan Campbell argued around the same time that his form had 'dramatically worsened', as proven by a dip in his performance relative to post-shot expected goals.

It's still possible that Rangers move for a new 'keeper, a potential upgrade on McGregor between the sticks, but the fact they have tied Jon McLaughlin down too suggests they may be happy with their options in the short term.
