With the January transfer window now open, former Glasgow Rangers player Bob Malcolm believes that the Gers will only let players leave for “top dollar”.
Malcolm makes transfer claim
The Gers are currently 19 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership and are in the Europa League round of 32, but it is not 100% clear whether all of their best players will remain at the club. Alfredo Morelos continues to be linked with a move away from Ibrox, while Borna Barisic is said to be a target for West Ham United.
Although Malcolm does believe the fight to hold on to their star men will be their biggest problem, he expects the Gers to stay strong in terms of their asking prices this month. He said:
“For me, the biggest problem that Rangers will have now is fighting off clubs who are wanting to sign their players because they have been performing so well.
“But the board made a big statement of intent by not letting Morelos or any other players go last year. There was also interest in Kent. In the past players were sold for under their valuation just so they could get money in. That isn’t the case now. They aren’t going to be held to ransom.
“In the past Celtic have sold players and made massive amounts of money on them. Rangers see their players in the same bracket. I don’t see why they shouldn’t be holding out for top dollar.”
It is now 10 years since Rangers last won a major piece of silverware. The margin they hold at the top of the league with just 16 games leaves them with a fantastic opportunity to finally end that silverware drought. As such, it is vital that they hold on to all of their star players during the January window. Putting the price demands particularly high is a sure-fire way to do just that.
Do you expect to see any major departures this month?
At some point, a number of their stars will leave. After all, there is only so much players can achieve in Scotland compared to the bright lights of the Premier League and other top European divisions. However, it is unthinkable that any would be allowed to leave at this point of the campaign.
In other news, Rangers’ transfer priority this month has been revealed.
