Former Glasgow Rangers manager Alex McLeish has said that George Edmundson should look to leave Ibrox this January on loan.
Edmundson urged to leave
23-year-old Edmundson has barely had a look-in with the 54-time Scottish champions so far this campaign, making just one appearance in all competitions. Not only that, he was hit with a seven-game ban when he attended a gathering that broke coronavirus regulations.
Speaking to Ibrox News, McLeish believes that Edmundson should look to move on from the club on a short-term basis. He said:
“Of course, you never like to be leaving because there is a kind of feeling of failure.
“Why not? You’re still attached to the club, it’s just a loan deal. Go out and get some confidence, enrich yourself with good performances and then allow yourself to think that you can play at that top level that Rangers strive for.”
Sale would be better
You can understand the thinking behind a loan deal. As McLeish says, it would give the former Oldham defender the feeling that, as long as he impresses, he could work his way into the Gers’ starting XI, and it also allows Gerrard to move on a player who is not in his plans, even if the Gers boss did call him “faultless” in the past.
Should Edmundson leave on loan?
The fact of the matter is, though, does Edmundson have a future at Ibrox at all? Since joining the Gers in 2019, he has made just 16 appearances in all competitions. At the age of 23, he should already be playing on a regular basis. Unfortunately, at this point, it would make far more sense for him to cut his losses and move on to pastures new.
