Ex-Glasgow Rangers defender Bruno Alves has urged Porto to spend £20m on Alfredo Morelos, saying such a fee would be a bargain.
The Lowdown: Porto want Morelos
Morelos has been heavily linked with a move to the Portuguese outfit in recent weeks, with him even said to have already agreed personal terms (Antena 1).
So far, it has been suggested Porto are willing to offer €17m (£14.5m), with that deal also including add-ons (A Bola).
The Latest: Alves suggests higher sum
Speaking to The Daily Record, Alves believes £20m would still be a bargain for the two-time European champions. He said:
“Given his quality and what he’s been doing in the last few years then I would say the reported fee of £20m isn’t a lot for Alfredo Morelos.
“It’s still a lot of money for Porto to pay but if you want that kind of quality then that’s what you have to pay so it’s the right price for him right now.
“If Porto want to buy him then they have to pay good money because he’s a player with a lot of value and is a Colombian international.”
The Verdict: Huge money
Morelos has been a fantastic player for Rangers, scoring 94 goals in 182 games for the club (Transfermarkt) – the Gers will be disappointed to lose him when he does depart. However, they will know he will be on the move at some point, and £20m would be a huge reward – that would more than double the previous highest fee they have received, when they sold Alan Hutton for £9m (The Scotsman).
Will Morelos be at Rangers next season?
That would also represent a record for Porto – they have never spent more than £18m on a single player. As such, it is likely the two clubs would come to compromise in regards to a fee, but as long as the Gers do not get bullied into a low price, there is a very healthy sum to be made.
