Rangers: Whelan expects ‘inevitable’ big offer for Alfredo Morelos

Rangers: Whelan expects ‘inevitable’ big offer for Alfredo Morelos - Rangers News

Noel Whelan believes it is “inevitable” that Glasgow Rangers will receive a big-money offer for Alfredo Morelos this summer.

Whelan expects big offer

Morelos was heavily linked with a move away from Ibrox last summer, but despite reportedly agreeing personal terms with Lille, he stayed with the 54-time Scottish champions.

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan appears to expect the Colombia international to leave at the end of this campaign. He said:

“I think whenever you’ve got a goalscorer, and one that’s been prolific for a number of seasons like Alfredo Morelos, there’s going to be interest in every window.

“If a big offer comes in, and it will, I think it’d be very hard for Rangers to turn down. I think that is inevitable. Yes, they’re a giant of a club in Scotland but financially, we all need that little bit of help.

“If you’ve got a player that is somebody that is a commodity, that can generate that amount of revenue with one sale then it’s hard not to look any further than letting them go.

“You can build and put that money into sustaining the football club. You can put that money into maybe three or four players out there on the field.

“He’s served his time at Rangers, he’s been there a long time. He’s given them lots of highs, some headaches along the way. If he does leave, the club buying him know what’s in his makeup.”

Great servant

This has been a difficult campaign for Morelos. As previously mentioned, a move away from the Gers looked close, which may have had a mental effect on him. Steven Gerrard chose not to start him in three successive league matches (Transfermarkt), and he has received two retrospective bans after allowing his temper to get the better of him on the pitch (BBC).

Will Morelos leave the Gers in the summer?

He has not been quite as prolific this term as he has in the past, but he still has 13 goals in 33 games in all competitions. He has shone in particular in the Europa League, scoring five times and providing an impressive seven assists in 11 matches. Currently valued at £10.8m (Transfermarkt), the Gers will no doubt feel they can command a bigger fee than that. Given his contribution to what has the potential to be a very successful campaign for the 54-time Scottish champions, no-one would begrudge him a big move.

In other news, Rangers fans are livid at this Ewan Murray tweet.
