Kevin Phillips believes that defender Ben Davies could give Glasgow Rangers more balance to their squad if he were to make the move to Ibrox.
Davies would be top signing
The Gers have been linked with a move for the Preston defender, for whom the Lancashire outfit reportedly want £5m this month. However, his contract runs out at the end of the season, meaning he could be available on a free transfer in the summer.
Speaking to Football Insider, Phillips was asked if the Preston star would be a good signing for Steven Gerrard and co. He said:
“Definitely. There are not that many left-sided centre-halves around. It does not half help so he could give Rangers good balance.
“Having been in coaching, it is quite difficult when you get two right-footed, right-sided players playing at centre-half.
“Of course, you also need quality but Davies has a lot of quality as well. He has shown that this season. He would have no problem going up to Scotland.
“It gives you a slight advantage being able to play at left centre-half and that may appeal to Gerrard. It does not surprise me that they are interested in signing him, he has done very well this season.”
Davies has been an important player for Preston ever since he signed for them in 2017. He already has 141 appearances to his name at Deepdale, helping to keep them in the Championship ever since then. Such is his importance, he was valued at £10m in the summer, while Alan Hutton said he ‘ticks all the boxes’.
Would you like to sign Ben Davies?
A £5m outlay this month would represent a significant amount for the Gers – perhaps too much for them to part with – but on a free transfer, this could be a very good signing.
It remains to be seen whether Ross Wilson and co can convince him to move north of the border, but if they can, we agree with Phillips, he could be a very good signing for Gerrard’s men.
