Former Glasgow Rangers defender Alan Hutton has suggested that Bongani Zungu has blown his big chance to impress Steven Gerrard.
The 29 cap South African international has struggled to make an impact so far at Ibrox, but he was included in the starting XI against Hamilton last weekend.
However, he lasted just 60 minutes before being taken off by Gerrard as the Gers drew 1-1. Speaking to Football Insider, Hutton believes that Zungu may not got another opportunity to show his credentials. He said:
“I was kind of looking forward to Zungu, Gerrard said he’d been training well and deserved his opportunity.
“If you look at it, the midfield is probably one of the toughest areas to break into in this Rangers side, I think there’s just so much talent and boys that are playing with great confidence at the moment so when given your opportunity, you need to grasp it.
“Zungu didn’t at Hamilton and I’m going to stick up for him a little bit, he’s been very much in and out and then it’s difficult to raise your game to the standards that you need to for one game, I think you need a run within the team.
“Whether he’s going to get that, I’m not so sure. The game did bypass him, he didn’t get on the ball enough to make things happen, which we want to see. We know he’s got a decent range of passing but it’s something we didn’t see too much in the game.
“It probably looks like Gerrard will revert back to what he knows best in midfield and he’ll have to possibly wait many weeks again for another opportunity. I’m just not sure that at this moment in time if he’s going to get that, or if he’s done enough to deserve that run.”
Not good enough
Given the club’s summer-long pursuit of Zungu, there was plenty of fanfare surrounding his arrival at Ibrox on the on Deadline Day last October (Rangers News). However, he has barely featured – the match against Hamilton represented his first-ever start for the club in the Premiership (Transfermarkt).
Would you sign Zungu permanently?
The Gers’ form so far this campaign has made it hard for Gerrard to justify chopping and changing his squad – they have lost just one game in all competitions so far this campaign (Sky Sports) and they currently lead the table by 18 points with ten games to go (BBC).
Zungu is currently on loan from Amiens, with the 54-time Scottish champions having a £2.7m purchase option (The Daily Record). Given his current form, it is unlikely that the clause will be exercised.
