Alan Hutton believes that Brandon Barker’s spell at Glasgow Rangers is all but over.
Barker has no more chances
Barker made the move to Ibrox from Manchester City in the summer of 2019, but he has failed to make a real impact with the 54-time Scottish champions, managing just 26 appearances for the Gers (Transfermarkt).
He moved to Oxford United on loan on transfer deadline day, and Hutton believes that he has now run out of opportunities to impress Steven Gerrard and co. He told Football Insider:
“I think Gerrard and his team are building a great squad and they’re developing with each game that passes.
“Of course you want to get better, if you have a certain standard, the players that you bring in have to either match that or offer more – that’s where Rangers are at at the moment.
“They’re flying high, and yes, Barker, he’s went down to League One, that’s probably a move that suits him, he’s one in the shop window.
“Gerrard’s given him more than enough opportunities, in my opinion, to stamp his authority in games and he’s not taken it for me.
“It’s about moving him on for good and it definitely shows you where Rangers are at the moment.”
Indeed, it has been a disappointing spell for Barker north of the border. He has often come in for plenty of criticism from the supporters, and it was no surprise to see him move away from the Gers after making just 10 appearances in the Premiership this term, even if he did hit the back of the net twice.
Should Rangers sell Brandon Barker?
He now has an important four months with the League One outfit to impress. A string of good displays could well attract interest from a number of clubs ahead of the summer market. The Gers will also be hoping he succeeds in the English third-tier if only to see his price-tag increase.
In other news, Steven Gerrard says he cannot defend this Gers man.
