Steven Gerrard has urged the Glasgow Rangers board to tie Glen Kamara down to a new contract as soon as possible following his display against Lech Poznan in the Europa League.
Gerrard wants new Kamara deal
The Gers defeated the Polish outfit thanks to goals from Cedric Itten and Ianis Hagi. Kamara was in impressive form in the middle of the park, completing three of his four attempted dribbles and amassing a pass accuracy of 95%.
Gerrard praised the Finland international after the game, and he made it clear that he wants the 25-year-old to put pen to paper on a new deal. He said:
“I thought Glen Kamara again showed why everybody is talking about him and there’s a lot of fuss about him.
“I thought he was outstanding from start to finish and my advice to the club is to move that situation along as quickly as they can.
“I think it is a huge achievement and it is thoroughly deserved.”
Important for the future
On paper, Kamara’s new deal does not look like a matter of urgency. His current commitment will run until 2023, meaning that the Gers will have him for at least two more seasons after this one even if he does not sign a new contract.
However, there are other reasons why the situation is pressing. While it is not clear how much a new deal would be worth in terms of weekly wages, you would imagine it would include a pay increase. With Marseille linked with a move during the summer and France Football reporting he’d cost €10m (£9.2m), as well as interest from the Premier League, a higher pay packet could well entice Kamara to stick around for longer.
Does Kamara deserve a new contract?
It also sends a statement to any club eyeing the Gers’ players. The Ibrox outfit will make it as hard as possible to sign any of their star performers, and that puts them in a far stronger position in the future.
