Danny Mills has told Football Insider that he believes Steven Gerrard may have told Glasgow Rangers trio James Tavernier, Borna Barisic and Connor Goldson not to sign new contracts until the summer in case he moves at the end of the campaign to a new club.
Gerrard could raid Ibrox for trio
However, Mills believes Gerrard may be playing a long game, and says that the former Liverpool captain could attempt to sign all three for a new club if he moves this summer. He said:
“Say Steven Gerrard goes on to win the Premiership this season, does very, very well, you just wonder who is in the background sniffing around Steven Gerrard and where he might think about going next,”
“He might just say to the players ‘who knows? Just hold on, just wait until the end of the season and see what happens. If we win this, then obviously your stock at Rangers is massively high in terms of new contracts or if I’m going to leave and you’ve only got a year left, I might want to take you with me to my next club. So don’t sign that new deal.’
“There are all sorts of shenanigans that go on in football so people can get the best deals done. Everybody is always looking out for themselves, everybody’s always looking out for that next move and what’s coming next.
“Sometimes you just don’t know what’s going on in football.”
This does seem to be a rather astonishing claim. Gerrard looks perfectly happy at Ibrox, and only seems to be concentrating on the job at hand at the club – a job that is going swimmingly. Why would he dare to disrupt their momentum by telling three of his most important players to contemplate hypothetical moves in the summer?
Will Gerrard be at Rangers next season?
And even if he were to leave for another club, would he really only look at Rangers to try and sign a trio of players who, according to The Athletic, are worth at least £28m? Of course, long-term plans are made in football, but this seems a little far-fetched.
