Danny Mills has suggested that Jermain Defoe could leave Glasgow Rangers this summer following the arrival of Fashion Sakala at Ibrox.
The Lowdown: Gers complete Sakala signing
The Gers completed the signing of the Zambia international earlier this month on a free transfer from Oostende (rangers.co.uk), where he has managed 14 goals and five assists in 33 games this term (Transfermarkt).
However, his arrival means that Steven Gerrard now has five strikers at his disposal, and one of them must surely leave the club this summer.
The Latest: Mills claims Defoe could depart
Speaking to Football Insider, Mills believes that one striker will depart during the transfer window and suggested that the one to leave could be Defoe. He said:
“I would say that Rangers are doing their business the right way round.
“They’re getting a player in first and then they can say ‘Once we’ve done that, somebody else can leave.’
“It might be Defoe but I guess it’ll all depend on finances on who’s got what and who’s doing what.”
The Verdict: Not necessarily
While Defoe, who has 32 goals for the Gers since joining from Bournemouth in January 2019, would be the obvious candidate to leave given that he is now 38 years old, it is not quite as simple as that. He has expressed his desire to play for another season as he wishes to perform in front of supporters once more (via Glasgow Live), and he has even suggested he has already been in talks with Gerrard in regards to a new deal (via Daily Record).
Should Defoe stay at Rangers?
Alfredo Morelos would be another candidate to depart, given he has previously revealed his dream to play in the Premier League (Radio Caracol), but there have been reports in regards to the Colombia international claiming that he will stay at Ibrox (The 4th Official).
It seems that Ross Wilson and co have a difficult decision to make this summer.
