Former Premier League striker Kevin Phillips has questioned why Glasgow Rangers are interested in signing Joey Veerman this summer.

The Lowdown: Gers eye Veerman

The Gers have been heavily linked with a move for the 22-year-old, who currently plays for Heerenveen in the Eredivisie, in recent weeks (Glasgow Live).

Atalanta are also reportedly interested in his services, and the Gers are even said to have made a £3.85m offer for the midfielder.

The Latest: Phillips shocked

Speaking to Football Insider, Phillips has revealed his shock at the pursuit of £7.65m-valued Veerman (Transfermarkt). He said:

"Wow, you would think some of them will have to go.

"That, for me, is far too many. It’s that scenario of trying to keep everybody happy.

"Davis is coming to the twilight of his career, will he play a lot and be in there, maybe not.

"Look at the list of midfielders they have, why would you want to add more into that.

"The only way is if Rangers know some of them are leaving.

"It’s a strange one, another midfielder would only create problems."

The Verdict: Quality over quantity

You can understand the point Phillips is making. Steven Gerrard already has a whole host of players from which to choose in the middle of the park. Steven Davis, Scott Arfield and Glen Kamara all played consistently last term, while Gerrard can also call upon the likes of Ryan Jack, Joe Aribo and new signing John Lundstram in the same position.

However, what Veerman offers is class and attacking threat. Last season, he scored nine goals and provided 11 assists for Heerenveen (Transfermarkt), while at 22 years of age, he has plenty of time left to improve as well.

He clearly has plenty of ability going forward, and if the Gers were to sign him, he could offer real star quality for the 55-time Scottish champions.

In other news, this Rangers ace is flattered by Premier League interest.
