Steven Gerrard slammed “soft and weak” Glasgow Rangers players during the build-up to Tranmere’s goal in a 1-0 pre-season defeat for the Gers.
The Lowdown: Gers lose to Tranmere
After winning their first warm-up match 1-0 against Partick Thistle during the week, the Gers travelled to Merseyside to take on English League Two outfit Tranmere.
However, their next match did not go as well, as the Gers lost 1-0 on Saturday after a goal from Kieron Morris.
The Latest: Gerrard angry
Unsurprisingly, Gerrard was far from happy with what he saw from his players and was particularly disappointed with the goal they conceded. He told Rangers TV:
“The goal we conceded was embarrassing from our level, from where we were last season.
“People jumping out of the way of tackles, people being soft and weak – I can’t tolerate that.
“As we move along, we’ll get stronger, we’ll get better, there will be a better level of performance.
“It’s quite frustrating to lose the game today but in the big picture, it’s not important.”
The Verdict: Will improve
It will be a disappointment to lose to Tranmere, even if it is just a pre-season friendly. After all, they currently play in the fourth tier of English football, so the Gers should have more than enough in their locker to pick up a comfortable victory.
Are you worried by this result?
However, there is no need for too much worry just yet. The Gers are still without several players who competed either at the European Championship or the Copa America this summer, and they are unlikely to be up to speed so early into pre-season. They will no doubt improve – they will need to do so quickly, though, as their Champions League campaign kicks off at the end of the month.
