Steven Gerrard 'ticks a lot of boxes' for Newcastle United's new owners, The Daily Record's Keith Jackson says.

The lowdown

The expectation is that Steve Bruce will be sacked this week after Newcastle's takeover was completed (via Sky Sports).

According to The Daily Mail's Craig Hope, Gerrard features on the shortlist of possible replacements.

Gerrard ended Celtic's run of nine consecutive titles last season by overseeing an invincible campaign.

According to a recent survey, nearly a third of Rangers fans already believe he should be considered one of the club's 'all-time greats'.

The latest

As part of The Daily Record's 'Monday jury', Jackson was asked whether Gerrard is a 'serious candidate' for the Newcastle job, to which he replied: "Why would he not be?"

Crucially for the new owners on Tyneside, Liverpool legend Gerrard is an 'A-list' name, 'which ticks a lot of boxes for the Saudis'.

And his achievements in the Rangers dugout make him 'an even more attractive option'.

The verdict

It's hard to see this appointment materialising, in spite of Gerrard's reputation.

Newcastle will want a manager who can oversee a long-term project, but they couldn't be confident that Gerrard would be in it for the long haul.

Jurgen Klopp may only be at Liverpool for two more full seasons, and there's surely no way Gerrard would turn down his former club if they ever came knocking.
